Introducing Feng Shui To Your Bedroom

May 8th, 2008 LeighA. Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice which uses the laws of Heaven and Earth to help improve one’s life by receiving positive Chi (or Qi). Chi is a life force or spiritual energy that is part of every living thing.

In addition, the Chinese Yin and Yang symbol represents the two primal cosmic forces in the universe. Yin (the moon) is a cold, receptive, feminine force, while Yang (the sun) is masculine and is associated with force, movement and heat.

Feng Shui schools teach that objects in your home such as furniture should be placed in a certain way to achieve harmony with your environment and have a positive effect on your health, wealth and personal relationships.

Arranging your bedroom furniture according to Feng Shui

The bedroom is one of the most important considerations when it comes to Feng Shui. We spend almost a third of our lives in our bedroom and it should be an environment that makes us feel safe, secure and relaxed. Family rooms, kitchens and playrooms are active spaces associated with the Yang force, while bedrooms need to be more Yin and relaxing.

Your main bedroom should be situated as far away from the front door as possible to give you a feeling of protection, stability and security. If there is an adjacent toilet or bathroom, the door to it should be closed while you are asleep. Any sharp edges such as the edges of bedroom furniture should be rounded off or softened by covering them. Computers, radios, televisions and even mobile phone chargers should be positioned as far away from where you sleep as possible to avoid disturbance from electrical currents.

The South West section of your bedroom is said to relate to your relationships, so you should avoid putting your dirty linen basket here! Instead place a photograph of you and your partner or a symbol of your happiness on the wall in this area. You can create a warm, romantic atmosphere in your bedroom through the use of soft lighting or candlelight.

How you decorate your bedroom is of course down to personal taste, but there are some Feng Shui guidelines on colour. Green is a good choice, as it can have a calming effect, while blue is relaxing but a little too cool. Yellow stimulates the mind, which sounds good but might also keep you awake at night. Red and pink encourage romance and passion, though an excess of red can bring too much fire (Yang) into the room. And beware of peach, which is said to encourage affairs!

Positioning your bed

The most important feature of your bedroom is the bed itself. The bed should be placed as far from the door as possible, and certainly not directly opposite, but you should still have a good view of the door from your bed. Make sure the bed is stable, as this is thought to bring stability into your life. The bed needs a strong headboard to protect your Chi while you sleep, and you should not sleep with your head facing an open window, as this will drain away your Chi. Sleeping on the floor is not advisable either, as this does not allow Chi to circulate below you.

The gap between your mattress and the floor should be free of clutter and, unfortunately for most of us, under-the-bed storage units are not recommended! Apparently they can disturb your sleep and limit the ability of the Yin force to re-charge you while you sleep. In the same way avoid anything placed above the bed, such as shelves or wooden beams - but sleeping under a skylight allows your Chi to dissipate while you sleep.

Mattresses and Feng Shui

Mattresses are believed to absorb Chi, so you should avoid purchasing a second hand mattress in case it contains negative energy or belonged to someone who has died. Mattresses need to be replaced regularly, turned regularly and placed in the sunshine for a few hours every few months. When choosing a mattress you should consider not only its size, but also the materials and elements from which it is made. Beds that contain too much water or metal, for example, can upset the balance of energy in your bedroom and cause problems in your life.

It makes sense that you will need to choose a mattress that fits into the space you have created for your bed. However, according to Feng Shui you should also consider how many people are to sleep on the mattress and what they are seeking in life. Single people who wish to remain single, for example can choose a small-sized mattress, but if you are looking for a partner you should opt for something larger, not just for practical reasons, but in order to create the energy necessary to draw another person into your life. Conversely if you are part of a couple, choosing a mattress that is too large for your needs is thought to create problems in your relationship!

A spring mattress with metal coils is best avoided as the metallic coils are conductive and will increase the electromagnetic field in your bedroom, which can be detrimental in terms of creating positive energy. However, if you choose a pocket-sprung mattress in which the coils are wrapped individually, the conductive effect will be reduced. Waterbeds are another option, but in Feng Shui terms these are also not balanced in their elemental qualities, which can lead to energetic disruptions. Water also conducts electricity, which can affect the electromagnetic energy that is already present in the environment.

For some people, Feng Shui is the guiding principle by which they arrange their home and life, while others are more sceptical. Whatever your views on Feng Shui, commonsense ideas such as keeping your bedroom clutter-free and creating a harmonious atmosphere with light and colour will help make your bedroom a relaxing and pleasant environment to sleep in.

Different Types Of Salad Bowls For Everyone

May 8th, 2008 DavidH. Posted in Food and Drinks | No Comments »

There is no type of salad bowl that should be used by everyone. There are different types of salad bowls dependent not just on the kind of salad being served or eaten but also on the preference of the .the one doing the serving, eating or drinking.

A salad bowl compared to other types of bowls is on the shallow side and is large and round. It is made for holding salad greens and that is why it does not have much depth as that of other types of bowls. It is large enough to accommodate the tossing and mixing of the salad ingredients.

There are different types of salad bowls and the main difference is the material used for it. The different types are as follows: wooden salad bowl, plastic salad bowl, glass salad bowl and stainless steel salad bowl. You can match the salad bowl to a specific type of salad or an occasion when the salad would be served.

The wooden salad bowl could either be pre-finished or hand finished. Pre-finished wooden salad bowls already have a varnish applied to it. Water is repelled and that preserves the quality of the wooden salad bowl. To hand finish a wooden bowl; all you have to do is to apply seasoning oils, mineral or walnut oil so that the wood can be preserved. For a more durable wooden salad bowl, it would be good to rub mineral oil or walnut oil together with beeswax. This prevents the bowl from cracking as some parts may dry without any oil. This type of wooden salad bowl has a cozy and earthy touch. Nevertheless, it could appear nice and quaint if matched with the right utensils and an appropriate table preparation.

As for the glass salad bowl, there is the ceramic glass bowl but it is not as common as the clear glass salad bowl. In this type of salad bowl, all the ingredients for the salad could be seen from the glass. Because of this material, it is easy to spot if the ingredients have been tossed thoroughly. Ingredients that are made out of colorful vegetables/fruits would look good in this type of salad bowl as it displays the colorful concoction through the glass. This in itself already gives an aesthetic value to the salad preparation.

The plastic salad bowl could either be translucent or opaque. In any case, since the salad bowl is plastic, there is no need to worry if it will break or should there be any need to apply oil to it. Plastic would be perfect if the salad would be served at a party or outdoors. There are different colors of plastic salad bowls that you could choose from and it will be a matter of matching the color of the plastic salad bowl to the table preparation or match it occasion for when you will be serving it.

The least common material for a salad bowl is the stainless steel. But that doesn’t mean that its quality is any less than the three other types of salad bowls. It is just that some people serve their salad on a plastic, glass or wood material than a stainless steel material. In the kitchen, the stainless steel salad bowl could work, but when it is served, it is usually transferred to either a wooden salad bowl or a glass salad bowl.

There are different tastes when it comes to preparing one’s salad, just as there are different tastes in choosing the salad bowl where it will be served. To make one’s taste exquisite, it would be good to also match the correct dinnerware, and table preparation to the salad bowl. This will complement the occasion and make your feast more enticing.

5 Tips For Laundering Heat Resistant Material

May 7th, 2008 MaxJohnson Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

When it comes to the work wear we utilize on a regular basis, we depend on the protective apparel or tools just a little bit more. Whether we are staying safe from abrasives, chemicals, flames, or intense heat, there are unique opportunities to stay safer in our lives. However, it is essential we take special precautions when laundering the apparel we choose to use in our lives. Heat resistant material is a highly popular and useful utility in our lives. Yet, there are some things we should keep in mind before we choose to launder those garments.

Before we start, it is vital to understand that following the manufacturer’s instructions is important. However, you should also keep in mind that those manufacturer’s instructions do not consider the possible embroidery or customization. Good commonsense goes a long way when it comes to laundering any type of work wear, but when it comes to heat resistant material; you are your own best friend.

1. How many washes is your garment good for? There are many types of protective garments whether it is a shirt, a pair of cargo pants, or your favorite jacket that will only retain its protective properties for so many launderings. This is not necessarily going to be the case for you, but it is best to insure you know what you are purchasing. If the garment states it is good for 45 washings, then after 45 washings or less, your garment will no longer keep you protected.

2. Did you know that industrial cleanings is harder on garments than laundering at home? Laundering at home is softer and allows you to maintain the same levels of excellence for longer. You will often be required to launder the garment industrially which will be harsher on the heat resistant material. If you are not sure, ask the retailer or do your homework before making a purchase.

3. Chlorine bleach should not be used when it comes to HR clothing of any type. Chlorine bleach will weaken the bond and face the material. Chlorine bleach is going to damage the basic structure of your often expensive garment. The best rule of thumb is to avoid bleach all together.

4. If you launder your garments or tools at home, be sure to launder them separately. You will need to insure you get the best protection for longer. This means you will want to insure the safety of your garments for the workplace as well as the garments for home. Separately cleaning is a vital rule that should always be followed for the safety of everyone concerned.

5. If in doubt, do your research. The internet is a cornucopia of information by users, retailers, and manufacturers. Take a look at what they suggest, and then use commonsense to make a final decision. You will find that sometimes, the information is conflicting, but you can get a general idea of acceptable practices that also follow industry standards.

When it comes to the heat resistant material of your life, you will need to insure you get the best for longer. The first tool is your own commonsense and capabilities.

How To Use Contemporary Furniture As A Base For Other Decorating Styles

May 7th, 2008 B.Williams Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

As you look back through your life, can you even begin to count how many interior design styles you’ve gone through? There were the character-based and dramatic styles of your youth and teenage years, the trendy styles of your post-college years, and various themes, styles and colors throughout your adulthood.

You’ve probably noticed that nearly every trend has something in common. At the time, it seems like that trend is the most elegant and sophisticated style ever, and one that you will love for years to come. But, invariably, you begin to not love it so much. When you do finally redecorate, you find that the trendy furniture that you loved so much just a few years earlier isn’t going to work with your new style. So out goes the overstuffed sofa, the papasan chair, or the distressed country-style TV cabinet. What could have been investment pieces are now at the second-hand shop or decorating the first apartment of a young relative.

Contemporary furniture carries with it a very interesting ability. When used in a contemporary room, contemporary furniture makes a big statement. It is a dramatic focal point of the room. On the other hand, when contemporary furniture is used in rooms of other styles it does just the opposite. It blends in seamlessly.

Let’s look, for example, at the biggest, most dramatic contemporary furniture piece out there. The red, leather sofa.

Now imagine that somehow, somewhere down the line, your tastes change from a preference for contemporary design to American Country style. You’ve fallen head over heels in love with it. You want your house dripping with old kitchenware, advertising art, pictures of farm scenes and flowered fabric.

Two styles couldn’t be further from each other if they tried. So… what do you do with that red, leather contemporary sofa?

First, drape a crocheted afghan over the back of one arm of the sofa. Don’t cover the arm up, just drape it there. Arrange several country-style pillows at the corners. Maybe one pillow has a bit of red in the flowers to pick up the color. Then put a white tatted doily on each arm of the sofa. Now your sofa looks perfect next to the white eyelet curtains and the old wooden rocking chair. Using bits of red throughout your home will also help solidify the red leather sofa into your design and make it look like a purposeful decorating decision rather than something you’re making due with.

Most other home decorating styles are even easier to combine with contemporary furniture. It’s easy to soften their sleek, modern lines to reflect more casual or trendy styles, or incorporate their strong shapes into more historical styles.

Begin to look at your large pieces of furniture as investment pieces. By using contemporary design for your main furniture style, you can easily move from one design style to the next by changing just a few things rather than having to replace your furniture every few years.

Decorating your home? Need designer furniture that is as unique as it is stylish? Have a look at the Beyond Furniture range and I am sure you will have a hard time choosing which piece of furniture you like the most.

The Credit Crunch Explained

May 7th, 2008 AndrewRedfern Posted in Finances | No Comments »

‘Credit Crunch’ is the name given to the global crisis that has been affecting the financial markets for the past year. The crisis is causing many people to get further into debt – the only winners appear to be the debt management companies. The crisis affects everyone – not just those working in the financial sector, so this article aims to break down the credit crunch for you into an easily digestible article.

So what exactly is the credit crunch?

The term ‘credit crunch’ refers to a condition in the global market where money borrowing becomes far less easy. Banks and investors become less willing to lend money to anyone, which drives up the price of debt products such as loans, credit cards and mortgages.

How did it happen?

Following past crises such as 9/11, central banks on both sides of the Atlantic lowered their interest rates to stimulate growth in the global economy. This resulted in many credit-unworthy people borrowing beyond their means. Debt products were sold in huge numbers to people on low incomes and typically these debt products were sold at low interest rates, but only for the early part of the repayment period. At the end of the introductory period their interest rates shot up, and repayments rose dramatically. Many people defaulted on their loans, and had their homes repossessed. With nothing to repay the loans with, the banks had to simply write-off these debts, which meant they had a lot less money than they thought

How does this affect the European markets?

European banks bought up the sub-prime loans, packaging them into financial products known as collateralised debt obligations.

Rather than realizing the return-on-investment they were expecting, the packaged debts have become worthless, and impossible to sell.

How does this affect the rest of us?

The cost of borrowing will continue to rise, which means that interest rates may skyrocket. Only the people with great credit ratings will benefit from great deals, the rest of us will need to tighten our belts or prepare for costly debt repayments.

The overall effect of the credit crunch differs depending on who you speak to. Some say we are on course for a global depression similar to that caused by the 1929 Wall Street Crash. Others say that this is just a minor correction of the global economic markets and the situation will soon stabilize.

The latter may be hard to believe when you consider that a record number of people are now looking for debt management advice to help them manage their repayments. With many central banks ploughing money into the system, however, the crisis could soon subside, but it’s anyone’s guess exactly what will happen next in the credit crunch saga.

The situation in the US can be used as an indicator as to what will happen in Europe. They are currently experiencing massive price rises of basic food stuffs and fuel. They are also experiencing one of the worst periods of home repossessions in US history.

Find Out What The Joy Of Cooking Is

May 7th, 2008 KennyVanderburen Posted in Food and Drinks | No Comments »

If you have never done it before then you must be thinking what the joy of cooking could be. The joy of cooking is the time you spend in the kitchen to prepare a meal for those people that you care for and love. Cooking for your friends and family is for many people a way of telling them that they have a special feeling for them, and maybe that is the reason your parents got angry when you didn’t finish your dinner. It was not about, not eating your food, it was all about you rejecting that one thing which they use to express their feelings for you. The joy of cooking is a feeling you have when you know that almost everyone loves food and you are the one preparing it for them.

Maybe strange to some, but the joy of cooking is not in the preparation of the food, but it’s at the moment that the people you prepared the meal for sit down and start to enjoy the different flavors you have put together. It is a long standing tradition that friends and family sit down together and have a good meal, relax and forget for a short time all the worries of the world. Those moments are the ones you should savor and when you all feel the joy of cooking by enjoying the meal you eat that will always be a trigger to think about those good times you had together.

Can the joy be thought?

When you want to learn to cook a meal it is not to hard to find a good teacher who can teach you how to cook various recipes. However, the joy of cooking is something that is passed from one generation to the next because it involves learning specific family recipes. Sometimes watching your parents or grandparents cook is enough to see what the joy of cooking entails. And before you know it you, the one who once didn’t know that there was such a thing a “the joy of cooking”, are the one spreading the joy and leaning others the true joy.

Learning to cook is not the same as learning the joy of cooking as we showed you. First you have to notice that there is even such a thing as joy in cooking and when you see the difference between “enjoy” and “joy” then you are ready to start learning. Watch and learn from others like friends and family members. If you ask them they will love to show you what it is they do with certain recipes just to generate a special effect with the people eating the resulting meal.

If you enjoy cooking for others it won’t be hard to find the joy in cooking. The joy others create towards you when you see them eating you meals and enjoying them. The time you have, with those people you love, at the dinner table and knowing that it was your dinner that brought them all together.

Kenny Vanderburen loves to write about his one passion, cooking. If you need some open grill outdoor cooking recipes take a look at his website. When Kenny is not in the kitchen or writing articles he is probably behind his computer to look for a website that teaches how to make an outdoor cooking grids.

No Final Salary Pension Scheme?

May 7th, 2008 Moneyman Posted in Finances | No Comments »

Over the past few years, final salary pension schemes have witnessed volatility in equity markets and a retired workforce that is living longer. Add the two together, and what was once a healthy pension scheme became a huge liability, carrying significant deficits.

To reduce the liability, one by one, companies closed their final salary schemes to new members. The rules of some existing schemes were also amended to require higher contributions to be made.

This means that the number of employees retiring with a pension that pays around 50% of their final salary is forever reducing, and is a trend that will not be reversed. Granted, the number of people staying with the same firm to amass forty years of service to qualify for the maximum pension is also reducing. Greater movement in the labour market will also be a contributing factor in lower pensions at retirement.

So where does this leave employees? Companies that have moved away from final salary pension schemes have turned to offering defined contribution or money purchase pension schemes. Here the employer and employee pays contributions into the scheme, more than likely based on a percentage of current salary. The premiums are then invested in pension funds that can range from with profits to UK equities to Far East funds. At retirement the amount in the kitty depends on the level of contributions but also on how well the funds have performed, increasing the risk to the employee.

The big difference is the level of contributions paid into the respective schemes by the employer. A typical final salary scheme may have received 15% - 20% from the employer with employees paying 5% or 6%. The money purchase scheme will require the employee to contribute at a similar level but the employers premium may have reduced to 5% also, that is to match the employees contribution.

It gets worse still for the employees whose company now offers a stakeholder pension scheme, whereby the employer contribution may be in the range of 0% to 3%.

It’s not difficult to see the impact this has on the pension pot. With contributions to money purchase schemes at least 50% lower than final salary schemes the amount of income it generates will drop by a similar amount. This could be less than the amount required to live on.

So from having 100% of salary many people face the prospect of receiving one quarter of that amount. Where does this leave employees in this situation? Well, neither option is easy to swallow. First, you work longer, putting back your early retirement at 55 to a more realistic 65. Another ten years at work definitely doesn’t appeal. The second option is to save more. Not always doable with rising living costs such as mortgages, utility costs and petrol, but saving as much as possible will help. For those lucky enough to be just starting out at work, the best option is to start a pension (or savings plan) as soon as you can.

The Simple Way To Understand Forex Trading

May 7th, 2008 JustenRobert Posted in Finances | No Comments »

So what is forex trading?

It is simply the trading of a variety of different foreign currency types. Foreign exchange trading used to be constrained to the bigger banks and institutional traders, but due to advances in technology, small traders can reap the rewards available in the forex markets by using trading platforms online.

The forex markets go by a number of different names: forex exchange, currency market and FX market, and is the oldest financial market, as well as the biggest and most liquid market. For example when compared with the currency futures market, you’ll find that the currency futures is one percent the size of the forex markets. Trading on the forex markets is not focused or centred on any single exchange, and moves from all major banking centres across the world.

Each world currency is on a floating exchange rate and the majority of daily currency transactions involve only the major currencies, such as the Euro, the Dollar and the Yen. Also currencies are always traded in pairs. For example, the Dollar/Yen or the Euro/Dollar.

For investments there are only usually four of the major currencies used. The US Dollars against the Swiss Franc, The US dollar against the British Pound, the Euro against the US Dollar and the Japanese Yen against the US dollar. On the trading markets they are represented in the following format:

- EUR/USD

- GBP/USD

- USD/JPY

- USD/CHF

You should also be aware that dividends are not paid on currencies

Basically if you think that one currency will appreciate (or gain) against another currency, you can exchange the first weaker one for the first and hold it. Providing all goes to plan, you will eventually be able to change the first currency back to the second and reap the profits made from the currency exchange differences.

So when are the forex markets open?

The forex markets are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, dealers work in 3 different shifts taking orders from brokers to execute overnight. So when you are asleep in your bed the dealers in Japan are busily trading with the dealers in Europe.

Unlike the stock market the movements in price on the forex market are smooth and don’t experience the same gaps and jumps when the stock markets open each day. The turnover each day on the forex markets is over a staggering $1.2 trillion, so investors are constantly entering and exiting their positions within the market place.

Recently the market has opened up to small investors. Previously the barrier to entry was significant due to large minimum transactions sizes and stringent financial requirements. Only the banks and big currency dealers were the main players in the market, as they were in a position to take advantage of all the benefits the forex market offers.

Brokers now break down the large inter-bank units, thus allowing smaller traders to buy and sell within the forex market place, taking advantage of the amazing liquidity and profit potential. The brokers, give you the opportunity to trade at similar rate and price movements as the big banks who used to have a monopoly on the market. The key for any new forex trader is to have a forex trading plan or strategy to follow to help negate the risk and potential for huge losses, and to maximise the chance of success.

Cleaning Maltese Tear Stains - What Really Works On Dog Tear Stains And Several Methods To Avoid

May 7th, 2008 SusanHelton Posted in Home Management | No Comments »

If you own a Maltese dog then you may have found that with the Maltese breed it is common to be cleaning Maltese tear stains to keep their faces white and clean.

Cleaning Maltese tear stains can be frustrating if you are using a method that does not work or if you are trying a method that may possibly harm your precious dog.

When I got my first Maltese I was constantly looking for ways to clean up or prevent the Maltese eye stain. I found that tear staining is a condition which is common in this particular breed.

I had heard that there were many different eye stain treatments available to help prevent tear staining, however there were many treatments that were harmful to my dog and I wanted to be sure I was using an effective and safe method on my precious pet.

In this article I will share with you 5 treatments that are commonly discussed as solutions to cleaning maltese tear stains.

The first 4 treatments are ones that I DO NOT recommend.

The 5th and last treatment I discuss is the one that I have found to be the safest, easiest and most effective treatment and it is the one I use on my own maltese dogs.

4 maltese eye stain treatments to avoid:

Treatment 1 – Tetracycline is a ten day course of treatment that your veterinarian will prescribe and may well need to be repeated a second time to be effective. If it is used on puppies it can cause their teeth to be stained yellow permanently before they have even grown.

Treatment 2 – Delta AlbaPlex is an antibiotic similar to tetracycline but contains very low amounts of steroid in it as well. This treatment will need to be used for some time before the benefits show.

Treatment 3 – Ak-Trol is an eye drop medication which is prescribed for people to use and contains neomycin, polymyxin B and dexamethasone.

Treatment 4 – Flagyl is an anti diarrhea medication that the vet will prescribe for treating yeast or giradia infections in dogs. However the metronidazole that it contains has also found to be effective in helping to treat tear stains, especially if the problem has because there has been an excessive growth of red yeast in the animal.

My favorite solution (after trying numerous options for removing tear stains):

Treatment 5 - A special powder that is mixed with my dog’s food. This is an internal treatment that works from the inside out. I don’t have to apply ointments or solutions and this makes it easy to do. It is an all natural powder that I simply add to my dog’s food. For my maltese it helped to cure the problem of maltese eye stain very quickly and has continued to work over the long term. I liked that it was safe for puppies and pregnant dogs. It contains only natural ingredients so it is unlikely to cause any unwanted side effects in your dog compared to some of the other treatments I mentioned above.

What do I like about this method? I saw results very quickly. I did not need to get a prescription from the veterinarian. So totally easy to use. I don’t have to apply any solutions or ointments to my dog. This treatment works from the inside out so it stops the problem from where it is starting. The ingredients are all natural and my Maltese love the taste. Bottom Line? This powder really works for my maltese. It just might help you battle your dog tears stains too.
