One Day I Will Own A Coffee Shop!

May 17th, 2008 GabrielAdams Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

Many of us have all dreamed of owning a coffee shop. It looks simple. People come in and order drinks and they give you money. Then you listen to the customers ordering. Are they speaking in a foreign language? It may seem like it at first. With all the coffee choices of flavoring, milk, espresso types, and cup sizes; it can all be very confusing. However, you need not fear with a little practice almost anyone can pick up this new language very quickly.

The most important decision you will make is the location. This may be the single factor that will make or break your business. Just because you fall in deep like for a building because of its charm does not necessarily make it the best choice for a coffee shop. You must take into account both vehicle traffic count and pedestrian traffic as well. Also the ease of parking and getting in and out of your location is very important. Also remember over 70% of coffee is sold before 12:00. Make sure your location takes advantage of this factor as well.

Drive thru operations is very welcomed by the coffee consumer. A drive thru on the average will increase your revenue by up to 40%. However drive thru locations also require more labor. This needs to be well calculated base own other factor including rent.

The brand you will choose also will have a deep impact of the success of your business. The drinks menus need to be well though out. The recipe and taste there-of will be viewed as the quality of your product. In addition; the price and margins also must be in lined with consumer expectations and willingness to spend. But you must have your products priced so that your adventure will profit and succeed. Marketing and Branding implies to your customers who you are. So make sure this is well planned.

Equipment is the next critical decision you have to make. Customers in general want quality served quickly. So when choosing espresso machines, blenders, and brewers make sure you keep these factors in mind Choose wisely and your repeat business will grow.

Furniture is also key. This sets the ambiance. Choose furniture that represents a nice welcoming image. Store often do better if they are made in section. Tables in one area with comfy couches and loveseats decorate another section seems to be the trend of today.

Counters and work areas must be arranged for speed and use. The work areas must be arranged like an assembly line. This will ensure good work flow and help to get the drinks out faster. This is critical to making the employees happy as well.

Capital will be another factor. One needs to be well financed to get going. It is a good idea to have at least 50% of the start up cost on hand. There are always small challenges that may occur. Lack of capital is a factor that has caused many businesses to fail. A coffee shop is also not immune from this ailment.

If you want to be a barista at your own shop; you may now realize that there are a lot of decisions one needs to make to help ensure success. The safest way might be to explore a coffee franchise. Visit my site coffee franchise reviews http://coffeefranchisereviews.com to get the info you need.

Dinner Party: How To Plan The Perfect Dinner Party

May 16th, 2008 GuyBridge Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

There are many different aspects to think about and consider when deciding to hold a dinner party, it’s better to go through the various stages with a notebook and pencil at hand to jot things down. Who is the party for; is it family, friends, an informal gathering of a group from work, or personal friends, or a dinner party concerning work. These last questions make a difference when organizing the party.

On deciding who the dinner party is for, let people know probably one week or two in advance. This will give time for any alternate arrangements if anybody has to cancel, and also arrange the time, say maybe 7.30pm for drinks before dinner at 8pm. Have a choice of alcohol, non-alcoholic, and fruit drinks to choose from to suit all tastes, and a few nibbles dotted around the room. This allows for people to mingle, especially if a couple don’t really know the other guests. Once all this has been achieved then the planning of the menu can be addressed, it is well worth checking out if any of the party has any food allergies, or if anybody is vegetarian, this will save embarrassment during the evening.

Consider the planning of the table. Is there going to be a lovely crisp white table cloth, creating color with napkins, or place mats? This is obviously the host’s personal choice, depending on whether this is a formal or informal party. Other choices for the table may be some small candles, or small bowls of flowers, or a centerpiece.

When holding a dinner party, the choice of food needs to be addressed carefully. Don’t try to cook a recipe you have never used before. This only ends in disaster, plus a huge embarrassment which nobody, the host or the guests want. If a new recipe is chosen, try it out a few weeks before the party a couple of times, till you are confident it will be all right on that night.

A great tip; sit down and plan the menu from start to finish jotting down all the fresh ingredients you will need, checking the cupboard to check that all the herbs you may use are in date, even down to the wine you will be serving with the food, and anything non-alcoholic for those who don’t drink.

On the day of the dinner party, make sure to be up early for anything that you have to go and get that you forgot on the list, or fresh fish, meat, whatever the menu is. Check off items off your list as you get them.

It’s a good idea to have everything involving the menu written down separate on a list, making it easier to keep track of things. If a starter can be made and kept in the freezer till about half an hour before the meal, then that is one course less to worry about, and the same goes for the dessert.

Everything that can be prepared in advance leaves it a lot less stressful for the host. Once all this has been taken care of, the table checked, the host showered and dressed, you can sit back calmly and wait for the guests to arrive.

One last tip; leave a new list in the kitchen pinned up and easy to read, when collecting the starters, to have a quick glance at the list to see what may need pulling out of the freezer, or putting into the oven, and the party should flow nicely.

Good luck!

Why Go Organic? Part 5 - Support Local Farmers!

May 16th, 2008 SamCohen Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

You probably feel good about your purchase when you go to your local farmer’s market to get organically grown fresh fruits and vegetables. It’s a nice feeling to know that the foods you are eating are as nutritious as possible, but there’s another reason why you can get a great deal of satisfaction from your pledge to go organic. Whenever you go to your local outlet to buy produce, did you know that you are supporting your local farmers as well as the environment? Fresher food and a cleaner planet are just two of the reasons for you and your family to enjoy only organic foods.

Organic farming is usually a family affair, with all family members pitching in to help run the business. There are far fewer family farms in the United States than there were back in the day when such a thing was usual instead of unusual. But now, with the added demand for organic foods by savvy consumers, the number of organic farms to produce these foods and farmer’s markets as an outlet to distribute fresh produce has grown by leaps and bounds. There are also roadside stands in some areas as well as shopping co-ops and even your local grocery store. Organic farmers sell the different foods that they raise in all of these places, and are finding that business is booming.

This kind of support tells the farmers that they are on the right track, and gives them an added incentive to make sure that the produce, eggs, beef, pork, poultry, cheeses and honey are of the finest quality. It helps these farmers to be able to stay in business, and can help to keep rural communities from slowly drifting into the city limits. Sustainable organic farming will insure that the family owned and operated farm that produced those tomatoes you enjoyed on your salad can continue to raise and sell organic products for years to come.

Local farmers also help to keep your area’s economy on an even keel, as your food dollars stay in the area instead of into the coffers of some huge conglomerate. If your local farmer’s market is a growers-only market, then you are getting the freshest foods that money can buy. You are buying your food directly from the farmers that grew it. These farmers decide on the prices that you pay, and generally they are less than what you would pay for organic foods in a grocery store.

You can be assured that these items, the most popular of all organic foods sold in the United States, are truly organic, as these farmers must follow certain rules and regulations in order to be able to claim that their products are organic. And remember – ‘natural’ foods are not the same as organic foods! The best organic food of all is that grown closest to where you live. You are helping both the farmer and the environment when you cut out the middleman and buy straight from the source!

Does Decaffeination Take Away The Goodness Of Green Tea?

May 15th, 2008 HilaryTempleton Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

Green tea has traditionally been used by the Chinese in the treatment of various ailments. It is believed to be rich in constituents that help fight the deadliest of diseases including cancer. The major factor to be considered here is the presence of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is believed to be a powerful antioxidant and which helps in killing cancer cells without harming the other healthy cells. Green Tea rekindles the memories and follows the three E’s like Enjoyment, essential health benefits and energy thus making it one of the most popular brews.

Tea and coffee are rich in caffeine and it is for this very same reason why many favor these beverages .Caffeine is a powerful stimulant that can be quite addictive as well. Health enthusiasts have their reservations about decaffeinated green tea as they believe that the decaffeination process takes away most of the medicinal benefits that green tea boasts of.

However, research studies conducted have been able to establish that subjecting green tea to the decaffeination process does not strip it completely of all its medicinal value. However, it also depends on the process of decaffeination used. Some suggest using ethyl acetate solvent which many believe is not as effective in retaining polyphenols as the natural method which uses only water and carbon dioxide. Researchers Lynn and Christopher Freville demonstrated that natural decaffeination can be done right at home as effectively as any other process.

If you are keen on switching over to decaffeinated green tea but are unable to procure it, there are some simple steps that you can follow at home that can help you make your very own cup of decaffeinated green tea. Experts suggest steeping the tea in hot water and discarding the liquid .The process is repeated for a second time, by the end of which the caffeine content is down by about 80%.

Green tea is believed to have 60-70% lesser caffeine than normal tea. Hence switching to green tea itself will help you cut down on your caffeine intake drastically. You will also be able to enjoy the multitude of benefits that this beverage provides. Other than enjoyment, Green Tea also provides energy and vigor. It’s a great drink for a lazy afternoon in the sunny climate of Solihull. In smaller doses it actually works wonder as it boosts the energy and reduces anxious feeling. During office tea breaks instead of a normal coffee or tea switch over to Green Tea, so that you are fully energized. You can also keep sipping Green Tea and even loose weight, doesn’t that sound cool?

However, if you do not need any caffeine whatsoever, but would still like to utilize all that is good in green tea then decaffeinated green tea is a good enough option. Those who still prefer to partake of the stimulant effect that caffeine provides are able to take the cake and have it too as not only do they continue to enjoy the feeling caffeine provides but also get the opportunity to allow the other beneficial components of green tea to detoxify their systems and help them lead a healthier life.

Enjoying Tex-Mex Cuisine

May 14th, 2008 AnnieDubois Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

Have you ever found that you tear up every time you get near an onion? Have you ever experienced a pepper burn? Chances are good that if you love Tex-Mex cuisine as much as me, you have encountered a good many unique conditions or situations where medical science just did not help one bit. Perhaps you just want some warm tortillas or want to know how to keep fresh fruit looking fresh. Regardless of the tip you need, those tips may be here!

Tearing up while cutting onions is common, but you do not have to suffer any longer. Get a candle. Yes, a simple candle. Light the candle and start cutting. For many people, this will relieve the tearing up associated with cutting into the heart of your favorite onion.

Warm tortillas are a favorite in my house. There are two ways you can warm up your own tortillas. Wrap three tortillas in foil with a dampened paper towel. Place the foil package in a preheated oven at 300 degrees for 10 minutes. You will have nice, warm tortillas ready to put into the tortilla warmer. Of course, you can also place three tortillas in the microwave on an appropriate plate covered with a moistened paper towel for 20 seconds for a nice warm tortilla experience.

Fresh fruit tends to turn brown after being handled or sliced. Whether you are slicing into an avocado, a peach, strawberries, or apples, try coating with a small bit of lime or lemon juice. The ascorbic acid helps the oxidation associated with the browning.

Grabbing for the nearest glass of water after biting into a hot pepper or chili is natural reflexes kicking in. However, the chemical that causes that burning discomfort is made worse by water. Instead, grab milk or ice cream. This will help alleviate the discomfort.

Roasted peppers are delicious as a main dish or as an ingredient. You can roast any pepper by cutting the pepper in half or quarters if excessively large. Take the seeds out with a spoon, and place the peppers on a baking dish sprayed with non-stick spray. Place in a preheated 400 degree oven for 10-20 minutes depending on the oven. This is delicious and easy.

Cooking spray is popular these days. However, if you use a cooking spray, use an olive oil cooking spray. It tastes a whole lot better and is significantly healthier for you and your family.

Frozen food generally is a great way to feed your family on those evenings when something quick is needed. However, you should remove and toss any food that is over 3-months old. The food will become freezer burned and distasteful.

Cooking tips are a great way to insure you get the most out of all your meals. Tex-Mex cuisine is a popular choice for many people these days, and you will find you get more out of your meal when you gather up tips for your own. The next time you are cooking, consider what you can do to make that meal healthier without losing the delicious taste. You may be surprised at what you discover.

Mexican Food & Corporate Gifts

May 14th, 2008 AnnieDubois Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

As a professional, the importance of corporate gifts cannot be ignored. Whether enticing a new client, thanking an old account, or rewarding employees, there are few things as important as a big thank you from a corporation. Mexican food is a great way to say thank you, and these can be produced into beautifully elegant and delicious gift boxes that will be easy to disperse and fantastic to receive.

Corporate gifts have an enormous impact on your company. You will find that this is also a great time for branding your logo and improving company recognition. Of course, you will also find your customers appreciate what you offer and remember you more when they have something that will remind them of your business.

Mexican food is a great choice for all your gift-giving needs!

Mexican food is delicious, healthy, and relatively inexpensive. This is a cuisine that is gaining in popularity. More and more people are appreciating good cuisine such as this, and it only makes sense to have it in a gift package. Imagine the possibilities! There are deliciously handmade salsas, margarita glasses, tequila shot glasses, and many other things to include in your next gift basket or box.

Of course, you want to be remembered for all the good things when it comes to your clients past, present, or future. Good ingredients will need to be a health balance of delicious and comforting. Chocolate is a favorite, and there is nothing quite as delicious as authentic Mexican chocolate either in bars or in a cocoa mix. Some things are more delicious than more you appreciate the quality.

Mexican food has an enormous history. When your corporate gifts include this cuisine, some of that exceptional history rubs off on you. You are associated with a naturally rich history filled with freedom, hardship, and empowerment. What more could a company ask for when it comes to public image?

With Cinco de Mayo, you will discover that celebrating freedom starts with the food you serve. Indeed, you will appreciate the benefits of celebrating freedom, and your clientéle will appreciate your ability to recognize the importance of the Mexican culture.

Holidays, birthdays, or even “just to say thanks” corporate gifts make a personal connection between company and clientéle. Knowing the best to get will mean investigating the options afforded you while taking careful care to insure what you do decide on is as special as those your are giving to.

When choosing a gift, you will find it is a good idea to know beforehand what it is you need, but adding a few niceties to the array will insure you are remembered longer.

A nice gift box of salsas will be gone in no time, but maybe the jalape

A Taste Of Mexican Cuisine

May 14th, 2008 AnnieDubois Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

When you think of food, what is the first thought that comes to mind? Do you envision delicious and hearty Italian meals? Maybe you prefer the robust Greek foods? Regardless of what it you choose, you will find that more and more people around the world are choosing delicious Mexican cuisine for their own.

There are many reasons Mexican cuisine has become such a favorite. Healthy and delicious, this is food that stays with you for generations and is extremely affordable. Yes, authentic Mexican cuisine is not expensive at all. You will find that it is even easy to incorporate this food choice into your regularly scheduled menu.

One of my own personal favorites for choosing authentic foods from Mexico happens to be the vibrant colors. The mix of fruits and meat leave a picture perfect composition worthy of the greatest artworks in the world. Such vibrancy means while my taste buds are relishing the flavors, my eyes are being pleased by the vibrancy.

When considering Mexican cuisine, you should first be aware that there is a different between authentic foods from Mexico and Tex-Mex foods. Tex-Mex foods are a combination or mingling of two cultures. While I thoroughly appreciate Tex-Mex foods, the authentic flavor of Mexican cuisine is undeniably unique and wonderful.

For instance, pico de gallo is a favorite of many people. This is actually Spanish in origin and translates to “rooster’s beak”. Pico de gallo is a wonderful condiment which consists of freshly chopped chiles onions, and tomatoes. Sometimes, those chilies will be serranos, but other times you will find the best of the jalapenos in the world. Lime juice is often used to preserve the color. This is a great addition to any meal and is perfect with a choice of meat and a warm tortilla.

Chorizo is both an ingredient and a delicious meal all by itself. A chorizo is a type of sausage. These are most commonly deep red in color and have a distinctive smoky flavor that will make it something to remember. This is used as commonly as breakfast sausage is to many Americans. These can be sliced and eaten in a warm tortilla or diced and added to other meals. In addition, chorizos are delicious grilled and served for the whole family.

Quesadillas are a favorite for children, and these are so easy to make! All you have to have is a tortilla and cheese. These are similar to the famous grilled cheese sandwiches except a tortilla is used instead. Generally, the tortilla is filled with a layer of cheese, and my favorite, a little chicken, and then this is folded in half so it resembles an omelet. Fry in a skillet and serve. You can even add sour cream or salsa for a delicious snack or meal for children of all ages.

When it comes to great Mexican cuisine, you will discover that the world is a much yummier and colorful place. You too can make meals to remember by brushing up on those tips that allow you to make the best in foods for your family and friends.

Healthy Eating Guidelines – Should Fats Be Part Of Your Diet?

May 13th, 2008 AnnieHorthorne Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

Healthy Eating Guidelines tell us that we must reduce the fats we take on board but what exactly does that mean, and how can we do it? We have to make a distinction between body fat and dietary fat. However thin we are we all have body fat and it is essential to protect our body’s organs and helps control body temperature as well as providing energy for our muscles. Body fat is produced as a result of the dietary fats that we eat as well as from the proteins and carbohydrates in our diet if we eat more than our body requires. It is also necessary to carry some of the fat soluble vitamins around the body. However much we need though it should only be taken in moderate amounts.

As well as the foods that would normally be associated with fats they are also present in foods such as fruits and beans, though in small quantities. They occur naturally in most foods, but more troublesome are the fats that are added in such things as pies, pastries, crisps and some fast foods. Saturated fats are those which are generally solid at room temperature, unsaturated fats are generally more liquid, and are generally assumed to be a better form of fats.

It is perfectly possible to cut down on the amount of dietary fats without sacrificing all the foods that we enjoy. One of the easiest ways is to reduce the amount of fats used in cooking or as a spread. Softer, spreadable butters and polyunsaturated margarines have less saturated fats and are easily available. Oils are also better than animal fats for cooking but do be aware that many oils labelled ‘vegetable’ often have coconut or palm oil in them – and they are high in saturated fats. Sunflower, corn and olive oils are best.

Dairy products are an essential part of the diet and are especially important for children but they do contain saturated fats. However by using semi-skimmed or skimmed milk the amount of fat can be reduced to almost zero. Skimmed milk is often enriched with vitamins. There are also some very good cream alternatives, available as both single (light) or double (heavy) which can be used as they are or in cooking with no appreciable taste difference, but a great deal less fat. You can also use a mixture of cream and yoghurt in many dishes. There is now a great deal of choice in low fat cheeses, though they are often lacking in taste. It is often better to use less of a stronger flavoured or mature cheese when preparing a cooked dish. You will get the same flavour benefits but without the heavy saturated fat load, grating cheese is also a good way to make it go further.

All meat contains saturated fats but modern farming techniques are producing leaner meats which less fat. By choosing meat that has little visible fat around it, or marbling through it and by eating a little less, adding lots of vegetables, pulses or carbohydrates then you can still enjoy all the meats you normally would. Chicken is low in fat provided you don’t eat the skin, as is fish. Oily fish should be considered an essential part of our diet, the fats it contains are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids which are good for health.

By applying these few simple healthy eating guidelines you can still enjoy all the foods you like, even those that contain fats and would normally be considered less than healthy – in moderation!

Pay Homage To The Great Pubs Of The World

May 13th, 2008 BradlleyMckoy Posted in Food and Drinks No Comments »

There always a watering hole away from home, and you’d want to take along the memories of those relaxing or rousing moments at the pub or cafe. It’s a good thing you can recreate the atmosphere in your home with pub souvenirs - personalized coasters sets, pub signs, and tankards. Indeed, nothing beats the pub experience.

Pubs and Cafes

You can always spot a pub or caf‚ anywhere you go, be it in New York, Liverpool, Ireland, or in an exotic hole-in-the-wall in the Middle East. Some of the places may not have been refurbished since the early 1900s, while some may have been redecorated to give the place a distinctive look and feel.

But ancient looking pubs get the thumbs up. These places also ooze with different drinks, offer hearty meals, and merry company. People looking for night action or revelry pack these places to sample the pub experience. Tourists, who find themselves smack in the middle of cafes famed for its brew, always ask for souvenirs to take home just for the fun of it.

Pubs and cafes indeed deserve the accolades for being able to draw in a mixed crowd, maintain public patronage, and interest through the years. But what makes a pub or cafe tower above competition? That’s right - it is about good service, fine wines, premium spirits, and excellent brews.

Hard-to-Forget Pubs

You don’t have to go to the ends of the world to get a taste of the best English pubs. There’s always a clone or a sister pub in the US of A - New York, Boston, Massachusetts, New Jersey. Name a state, there’ll be those cozy nooks that offer jukeboxes, karaoke, or live music. There are pubs for different lifestyles, interests, tastes buds, and budget.

Pubs first sprouted in England when people started selling their own draught. Someone thought of serving these drinks in comfortable settings with robust meals, and the idea took off. Soon people were flocking to these public houses to indulge in spirits, talk, or carousing.

Today’s pubs cater to different clientele - the young set, the executives, and the gentlemen of leisure. Each tail their favorite food, music, and entertainer, or just soak in the spirit of the place. The young ones go for DJ rockin’ fun and follow the upcoming events closely, while others just go there to see and be seen.

Taking the Pub Scene Home

If you can’t get enough of the bar scene, why not recreate the pub scene in your home? You can ask your friends for great ideas to convert that extra corner in your apartent into an Irish or English bar. No, you can’t transport that Blarney Stone to your living room. You’ll have to settle for less.

For private parties where you can rock until the wee hours of the morning, you can have different themes. You can rent a jukebox to blast off country or soul music, and cook up a storm of authentic Irish or English grub - don’t forget the Shepherd’s Pie and beefy burgers that would make competition anemic in comparison.
